Twenty-five excited Year 4 children from Norwich Road Primary School in Thetford, Norfolk climbed on to the stage. Split into small teams, and garbed in matching team tee-shirts, over the following 15 minutes they enthusiastically demonstrated their prowess at 'mental literacy'.

Mental literacy is a concept devised by their class teacher, John Bell, who believes that the rapid thinking skills required in mental arithmetic should be equally applicable to literacy. Jenny Stevens talked to him about his novel approach, using ´Keyboard Crazy´.
